Stratigraphy = The study of soil and rock layers (strata) at an archaeological site to understand the sequence of human activity and natural processes over time.
Carbon dating = A scientific method used to determine the age of organic objects by measuring the amount of radioactive carbon-14 remaining in a sample.
Geophysics = The application of physical science techniques (like ground-penetrating radar and magnetometry) to detect and map archaeological features under the ground without excavation.
Tumulus = An ancient burial mound made of earth and stones, often covering a grave or several graves.
Midden = An archaeological term for an old dump for domestic waste, containing things like animal bones, pottery shards, and shells, which give information about past human activity.
Menhir = A large, upright standing stone placed by humans during prehistoric times, often for ceremonial or religious purposes.
Bas-relief = A type of sculpture in which the figures are only slightly raised above the background, often carved into stone or cast in metal.
Experimental archaeology = A field of archaeology where researchers recreate ancient techniques and processes to better understand how artifacts were made and used.
Papyrus = A thick paper-like material made from the pith of the papyrus plant, used by ancient Egyptians and others for writing before the advent of paper.
Radiocarbon method = The use of the radioactive decay of carbon-14 to estimate the age of formerly living things, commonly applied to date bones, wood, or textiles found at a site.
